Been thinking a lot about this recently - I don’t know - should they collect? notions of material permanency & ownership are so embedded in principal & practice that they seem core to what museums are, but in the context of a ‘world museum’ what does collecting actually do? 1/5 https://twitter.com/tibetcurator/status/1286002250477907970
Is the incorporation of momentary decisions of what is and what is not representative into state of material permenancy nessecsry to have a conversation about or show respect for multiple ways of being in the world? What are the effects of making these permenant? 2/5
Are world museums in European cities the right places to archive global historical moments through collecting? Do they have the required structures of practice to do this in a way that is useful, respectful & meaningful? 3/5
Can the money that is required to keep objects in a state of material permenancy be better spent to support the work that museums and the communities that they are connected to value & find useful? 4/5
I think we need to reimagine collecting as a temporary & distributed practice that is focused on holding conversations around objects, & thinking about how we might archive those, rather than assuming permenant ownership over material things. 5/5
