Any policy that encourages everyone to drive their own private vehicle regardless of whether or not they need to is ableist.
It hinders those with conditions like epilepsy or blindness which means they’re unable to drive, and are instead forced onto streets built for a medium they can’t access.
It hinders those who can’t afford a car but could afford to use a handcycle, wheelchair or mobility scooter if only the streets were safe and pleasant enough to ride on.
It hinders those for whom public transportation like the bus is their only means of accessing their community, who are forced to waste hours of their lives stuck in the traffic caused by private vehicles.
And it does the same to those for whom a private car is their only possible means of getting around. If you need to make a journey by car, you should never be sat in traffic made up of people who are making journeys < 2 miles out of pure laziness.
Good transport policy should encourage everyone who doesn’t need to drive out of their cars and into active travel to leave space for those who actually *need* cars for their mobility.
