/ After several attempts to engage with the government, we have finally received confirmation that the Prime Minister and Health Secretary are "unable" to meet with us to discuss our call for a #CovidInquiryNow "due to the current pandemic".
/ This is deeply disappointing for bereaved families who believe a statutory public inquiry with an immediate start is the only way to ensure lessons are learned and lives are saved in advance of a second wave.
/ Although the Prime Minister has now committed to an "independent inquiry" of some form, there is no clarity on what this might look like or when it might be.
/ We need a statutory public inquiry that can access crucial evidence, compel witnesses to engage and involve bereaved families and hear our experiences. We need it to start now, not in five years' time so that lives can be saved ahead of a potential second wave.
/ Today we have reluctantly instructed our lawyers to send a pre-action letter to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Health informing them that if they continue to ignore our calls, we will be forced to initiate judicial review proceedings at the High Court.
/ In order to do this, we need to know that families will be protected from any adverse costs if the Government claim against us should we be unsuccessful, and we also need to raise funds for legal fees and campaigning costs.
/ We have today launched a @crowdfunderuk page to raise funds for our legal challenge. If you believe that a #CovidInquiryNow is needed to learn lessons and save lives, we'd be hugely grateful if you could support however you are able
