On this day, 23/7/1916, @OldBloxhamist Captain Basil Benjamin Burgoyne Brooks (1st/4th Oxford & Bucks Light Infantry) was killed in action at Pozières on the Somme. He was 21 years old. 1/6
Basil Brooks, KIA 23/7/1916, was a pupil at @BloxhamSchool between 1906 and 1912. He was a talented sportsman and an enthusiastic member of the school’s O.T.C. 2/6
The Brooks family lived in comfortable circumstances at Athelstan Lodge in North Oxford. Basil’s father was a J.P., and served as Mayor of Oxford in 1907. 3/6
Basil joined up on 29 August 1914 and was a Captain by 1916. In June 1916 while on leave, he married his Belgian sweetheart, Germaine Deru. A widow after a month of marriage, Germaine wore his captain’s pips as a brooch in later life. 4/6
Basil was buried in Pozières Military Cemetery, near where he fell. After the war, the family visited the grave of B4 as he was known to them thanks to his initials. Basil’s father was responsible for the war memorial in Summertown. 5/6
