1. When she was a young woman working on her family dairy farm in Wisconsin, one of my archery students entered a cow she raised in the local fair. It won 1st place. But the judge didn’t believe a girl could have raised a 1st-place cow, and accused her of lying.

He said her dad must have done it. The judge took the 1st place ribbon and gave it to the 2nd place winner, a man. My student’s dad didn’t correct the judge or stand up for her.

At an archery tournament I competed in a few years back, a young Latina woman took the highest score in the entire shoot, beating out all the older white dudes who usually place 1st and 2nd in their divisions. They were pissed.

One dude was so pissed that he insisted to the judges that she had to have cheated, and demanded that they investigate. In 2015. Mind you, there’s no prize for overall highest score, so he wouldn’t have won anything for it anyway. He was just pissed that she did well.

In 2016, a woman won both the primary and the general election of this country. In spite of that, she was accused of “rigging” the primary and had the GE stolen from her. The nation shrugged. She and her supporters were told to “get over it" and to “go away and knit."
