The fallacy inherent in weak analogies. These bleeding heart tear-jerkers are doing the rounds on Twitter and elsewhere. One stops to ponder, but this is ephemeral. The analogies ring true exclusively at the level of the superficial, and a look beneath the surface reveals why.
Peddlers of these retorts omit the fact that BLM is ideological, and that it's belligerent. It has identified opponents and scapegoats. It has doctrine and dogma. It has associated cult-like ritual. It regards itself as the distinguisher of the righteous and the wicked.
And as with most cults and religions terrible things are being said and done in its name. There are extremists calling people genetically defective for lack of malanin. There are those kneeling on the necks if infants. There are rabid anti-Semites.
People are beaten up and abused - all in the name of BLM. There is danger here, and depravity. When people are being vilified for not performing the rituals, not chanting the slogans, something is seriously wrong. I, like most other people, believe that inequality exists.
I believe that danger exists and that it may be disproportionately so for black people all over the world. It is important that we dissect the problem and look at all facets and aspects thereof. BLM is refusing to do that.
For this reason and for its failure and refusal to distance itself from hateful extremism, I cannot in good conscience use their slogan or perform their rituals. I will also not use any counter-slogan like All Lives Matter. This too has become ideological.
ALM is also too readily weaponised by its detractors. So no sloganeering from me. Let's rather take a good look at social givens, use the information constructively and endeavour to improve the lives of those in danger and in need. It will be a lifelong project, not a slogan.
What came about over the course of centuries will not be changed quickly or meaningfully by demonstrative or performative actions that fail to consider the whole.
