Been engaging with “BLM triggered the COVID-19 second-wave” truthers to try and work out why, six weeks after the protest, it’s such a firmly held view.

Initially it was ‘this is risky of course people will pass it on’...
Then, when no transmissions were recorded or even suspected, it became "well maybe there was no transmission but it’s definitely the exact moment everyone gave up social distancing"...
In recent days it has mutated again. The argument is invariably “there had to have been transmissions, despite what the useless dept says”. It's a cover-up, or at the very least hidden in some way.

It's in the nexus between mainstream news with an agenda and crackpot attention-seekers with a loyal following that this kind of misinformation thrives and passes into popular wisdom.

Prejudice is the starting point. Media launders the theory. Police chiefs declare it as fact.
