TW: sexual assault

my friends in greek life: we have all had some positive experiences and affirmation of our identities in some form. however, it’s important that we consider people that didnt get those experiences; consider the people the system left beaten and bruised
i have had an incredible experience with my own chapter!! BUT! i would gladly discard my letters and my affiliation with an exclusionary system for benefit of my peers!!
are there some good aspects to greek life?? yes—there’s a good amount of programming and networking and teambuilding. can we access those things elsewhere? ABSOLUTELY !
at its roots, greek life is an oppressive, patriarchical system that promotes segregation, rape culture, and violence
additionally, no matter how far we distance ourselves from our national organizations, their endorsement binds us to other chapters at state schools that we have a tendency to compare ourselves to so that we may remain the gold standard
today, @witchythey shared an infographic that detailed the political donations of greek orgs that aim to silence survivors and prevebt federal anti-hazing legislation. i wanted to vomit
by maintaining our memberships and wearing our letters—no matter how much we distance ourselves—we are willfully associating with those oppressive values. i cannot align myself with something something so vile
we might think we’re better because we’ve been spoon-fed that notion since arriving on cwru’s campus, but the sexual violence and discimination say otherwise: we are no better
is there a way to salvage the “good parts” of greek life? honestly idk, im just a 20 something year old without a college degree. is there a way for this system to exist and guarantee the safety and affirmation of students? i dont think so
ive been examining my personal relationship with my chapter and the strongest feelings i have are for individual members. those friendships will still exist outside of the system. you can still see these people and network and do informal programming
as far as im concerned, the livelihood and safety of my campus community is all that matters at this point. fuck anything else. fuck sexual assault, fuck discrimination, fuck exclusion
