I would find it very disappointing if Morneau resigned as a result of this scandal. He has done a solid job managing a rapid expansion of spending programs to combat a recession and covid fallout.

Just today S&P stated confidence in our country's fiscal outlook as a result.
It's very disheartening that in Canada we so rarely judge our govt's by the success or failures of their policies. In fact we rarely if ever report on success at all (just not newsworthy).

Instead we judge by side elements or scandals.
The worst elements of Harper's govt were not the scandals. Yes that's where the media focused their attention. That's what most remember.

But Bev Oda's entitlements & MacKay's helicopter were trivial compared to the real damage Harper did to our systems of govt and laws.
His criminal justice system changes were counter productive, especially on drugs. His anti-terrorism law draconian. Huge numbers of charter challenges. Fiscal changes that created structural deficits and program cuts that took years to reverse.
CPC's idea of budget prudence is balance. Always balance. No matter the cost. No matter the situation. They didn't even want to go into deficit during the 2008 downturn.
And don't get me started on the environment.

My point being - CPC policies are bad.
A govt should live and die by its policies. By its success on its portfolios.

But yet it's the scandals that get the attention. It's the scandals that drive the news.
The next govt (be it LPC, NDP, CPC, GPC, or whatever) will be scandal plagued too. Cause that's what works for the opposition to get traction.

But this doesn't serve us. We're not getting the best govts. We're just getting the ones with the best PR teams.
