Funniest NBA narratives backed by advanced stats (thread):
According to BPM (OBPM, DBPM too)
which “estimates player contribution”,

Kobe (01-10) barely hooped at an All-NBA level (6.0 BPM is thought of as an All-NBA player, Kobe was at 5.7).

Stephen Curry from 2014-16 has a higher DBPM (1.5) than Gary Payton did from 1995-97 (1.2).
Klay Thompson since 2016 has a - 1.7 DBPM. For comparison, James Harden (1.1), Kemba Walker (-0.5) and Damian Lillard (-0.6) were all apparently superior on defense.

LeBron in 2009 was a better defender (3.7 DBPM) than Tim Duncan (3.3) and Ben Wallace (3.5) ever were.
Manu Ginobili in 2005 was as good as/better (6.9 BPM) than Michael Jordan in 1998 (6.9 BPM), Kevin Durant in 2019 (5.5 BPM), 2017 Steph Curry (6.9 BPM), 1984-86 Magic Johnson (6.7 BPM), and all but 2 seasons of Kobe Bryant’s 20 year career (5.9 or less).
Bruce Bowen from 2003-08 (his peak) apparently defended worse (1.6 DBPM) than current day Donte DiVincenzo (2.7 DBPM). While we’re on the subject of Donte, his current season is better (DBPM wise) than the best of Kobe’s, Payton’s, Wade’s, Kidd’s, Butler’s, and Holiday’s careers.
Horace Grant (11.4 BPM) apparently matched Michael Jordan’s brilliance (11.5 BPM) in G4 of the 93 Finals....or did he?

Jordan: 55/8/4 on 61.2%
Grant: 17/16/2 on 62.3%

In last years Finals, Siakam’s 32/8/5 in G1 (17.7 BPM) was better than Curry’s 47/8/7 in G3 (17.2 BPM).
Moving on to VORP (basically how much better a player is than the worst player in the league).

Harden in the 2018 playoffs (1.6 VORP) was about as good as Hakeem in the 1995 playoffs (1.7 VORP).

Chris Paul from 2008-09 (19.2 VORP) > 2x MVP Tim Duncan from 2002-03 (15.7 VORP).
Kawhi’s 2019 playoff run (2.9 VORP) is as good as the best run Michael Jordan’s ever had (2.9 VORP in ‘92).

LeBron’s 17’ playoff run (33/9/7 on 65% in 18 games with a 2.2 VORP) was BARELY better than LeBron’s infamous 11’ playoff run (24/8/6 on 56% in 21 games with a 2.1 VORP).
2019 Nikola Vucevic (5.5 VORP) is apparently better then any version of Steve Nash (peaked at 5.3), Dwight Howard (peaked at 5.4), and better than all of AI’s seasons except 2001.
On to Win Shares (basically how many wins a player is responsible for).

JaVale McGee (4.5 WS) is more valuable to the Lakers this year than Russ (4.3 WS) is to the Rockets.

Based on his rankings in DWS and DBPM, Nikola Jokic is a top 10 defender this year..
In 2019 Russell Westbrook (5 DWS) was more valuable defensively to OKC than DPOY Finalist Paul George (4.9 DWS).

These barely scratch the surface, there’s dozens more, but the point of this is: if advanced stats play a big role in your evaluation of players, ...😬
From what I’ve gathered, the only advanced stat that’s good is multi-year RAPM. Efficiency stats like eFG% and TS% (my favorite) are good too.
Bonus: top 15 players of the modern era as ranked by a combo of BPM and WS/48 using their 5 year playoff peaks:

1. MJ
2. LBJ
3. Kawhi
4. Duncan
5. D-Wade
6. Magic
7. Shaq
8. Curry
9. Bird
10. CP3
11. KD
12. Hakeem
13. Kobe
14. Harden
15. KG
Forgot about Dirk, he’d be tied with Hakeem, Kobe, and Harden
