Been brewing this one for a while but going to do a thread of #ReceptionPerception goodness on the Seahawks WR duo, one that I expect to be considered a top-5 duo very soon.
Starting with DK Metcalf...
Starting with DK Metcalf...
The Seahawks wisely simplified DK Metcalf's rookie year assignment.
- Took 63% of his snaps at left WR, highest of any outside receiver sampled in 2019.
- 53.2% of his charted routes were either a slant or nine route.

However, who cares...because DK Metcalf was dominant there.
- 91.7% success rate on slants (77% NFL avg), second-best among sampled 2019 WRs.
- 61% success rate on nine (55% NFL avg).
Ask what the player can do, not what he can't. Let him crush it.

Overall DK Metcalf was awesome as a rookie, both as a separator and at the catch point
- 73.9% success rate vs. man coverage (85th percentile)
- 74.7% success rate vs. press (79th percentile)
- 14th among sampled 2019 WRs in contested catch rate - 81.3%

My pre-draft comp for Metcalf was Dez Bryant. His rookie #ReceptionPerception results were so similar to peak Dez.
Dez Bryant 2014:
- 75.5% success rate vs. man coverage (88th percentile)
- 81% success rate vs. press (95th percentile)
- 57% of routes were a slant, nine or post
Dez Bryant 2014:

- 81% success rate vs. press (95th percentile)
- 57% of routes were a slant, nine or post
Now all this DK positivity should not take ANYTHING away from the Seahawks true No. 1 WR.
Tyler Lockett finished about the 79th percentile in #ReceptionPerception's success rate vs. man coverage in 4/5 seasons:
2015 - 76.6%
2016 - 69.7%
2017 - 72.2%
2018 - 74%
2019 - 77.5%
Tyler Lockett finished about the 79th percentile in #ReceptionPerception's success rate vs. man coverage in 4/5 seasons:
2015 - 76.6%
2016 - 69.7%
2017 - 72.2%
2018 - 74%
2019 - 77.5%
The #ReceptionPerception methodology long pointed to Tyler Lockett becoming a star. That has now happened.
In 2019, Tyler Lockett finished among sampled WRs:
- 5th in success rate vs. man coverage - 77.5%
- 3rd in success rate vs. press - 83.7%
- Both above the 95th percentile
In 2019, Tyler Lockett finished among sampled WRs:
- 5th in success rate vs. man coverage - 77.5%
- 3rd in success rate vs. press - 83.7%
- Both above the 95th percentile
Conclusion: If they aren't already, Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf will soon be regarded as a top-5 WR duo. Won't be surprised if they absorb 50% of the Seahawks targets next season. They're a 1a, 1b type duo like the Bucs WRs from 2019.
