Since Covid arrived, 179,000 more Americans have died than would in a normal year. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/05/05/us/coronavirus-death-toll-us.html @DeniseDSLu @jshkatz
Deaths are now at least 10% higher than normal in most states. That group includes states in every region of the country. (I’ve left off the top 4: NY, NJ, CA, PA) https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/05/05/us/coronavirus-death-toll-us.html
In some ways, it’s easier to show you states where things look normal. There are very few states like that. Two of them are not part of the continental U.S. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/05/05/us/coronavirus-death-toll-us.html
These charts show you deaths from *all* causes. They do not depend on whether coronavirus has been accurately determined to be the cause of death.
Just to put the total number in context: Last week, we reported on a new record in drug overdose deaths for the United States. In 2019, 72,000 died from drug overdoses. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/07/15/upshot/drug-overdose-deaths.html
The only things that kill 179,000 Americans in less than a typical year are heart disease, cancer and dementia. This chart puts the current excess death number next to typical death numbers from those causes. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/03/16/upshot/coronavirus-best-worst-death-toll-scenario.html
These excess deaths numbers lag a little. We won’t see the deaths being reported by states right now for another week or two. But, overall, the excess deaths are typically higher than the official coronavirus death numbers. https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/05/05/us/coronavirus-death-toll-us.html
Also, a technical update. We have been publishing these numbers for a few months now. We made a small change in our methodology this week that is worth noting: All of our all cause mortality estimates now come from the CDC.
