see the thing is that hiram lodge, father of veronica lodge, who is archie’s girlfriend, runs the for profit prison in riverdale and he puts archie into it partly because he doesn’t want archie dating his daughter. the prison is named after leopold & loeb two infamous gay men who
committed murder together and in the original play archie’s weird fantasy archie goes to new york city and becomes roommates with leopold and then comes out of the closet. when archie escapes from prison it’s contingent on him having his first
gay kiss and then being immediately stabbed. archie’s first gay kiss happens in the gay prison. when archie arrives in prison however there’s a shot of a sign in the prison warden’s office that says “when in disgrace with fortune and men’s eyes i alone beweep my outcast state”
which is a quote from idk sounds biblical anyway the episode is actually referring to the film fortune and men’s eyes which is about a guy going to prison and discovering he’s gay. but prior to archie goign to prison if you’ve been following correctly he has known hiram lodge who
when archie is campaigning for his father to become mayor says to archie that he goes “door to door to stare into men’s eyes” which is weird wording for literally just canvassing so the line is actually hinting at the references in archie’s prison arc to come and this further
hinting at archie’s ultimate overarching gay arc, preestablished by RAS prior to his creating riverdale. when archie professes his homoerotic fantasy about moving to new york city with jughead this is only further emphasized.
when i say that i believe in jarchie longcon and that riverdale is playing a massive game of 5D chess this is what i mean.
