Just in case folks are wondering, Art 31 of the Vienna Conv on Consular Rel prohibits US authorities from entering the SF consulate w/out permission (except in case of a fire). https://legal.un.org/ilc/texts/instruments/english/conventions/9_2_1963.pdf https://twitter.com/BethanyAllenEbr/status/1286056021073559553
Not that anyone would suggest this, but it is worth noting the US needs to respect the inviolability of foreign consulates, especially since the US uses this rule to protect its own consulates overseas, even in China. Remember Wang Lijun? https://www.voanews.com/archive/us-consulate-reportedly-shielded-bo-aide-delivering-him-beijing
This is not to say that China should be harboring a suspected intelligence agent in a consulate, or using its consulates to run espionage. It should not. But the US needs to play by the rules here (so far, it has).
(I admit it: these tweets are mostly just an excuse to talk about the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations for the second time today.)
