At the end of my 1st season taking FPL ‘seriously’ (playing to the end of the season & involved with FPL Twitter from half way) I’ve learnt a lot so going to make & pin a thread of what I’ve learnt to help me for next season & might be of use to others:
1. Start the season with some money left in the bank for transfers. It’s so hard to predict what players will play well before the season starts, you will want to make some significant transfers early on without ripping up your team.
2. Captaincy choices are really important for points & rank. There are no guarantees but best to go with premium more reliable options and try to keep with 1 player consistently for a while for higher chance of captaining them when they haul.
3. Form over fixtures for mids & attackers. Fixtures over form for defence.
4. Take less hits. And only take a hit if you think the player/s will score more than 4 points more than the sold player. Be more patient for getting the next player in and try to plan more ahead. My hits rarely worked out and usually regretted them.
5. Save BB, TC & FH chips for later in the season. Ideally for double game weeks. Made this mistake too early in the season before I realised DGWs were a thing.
6. 1st wildcard is good to use early ish (GW 4-8). It’s so hard to call good players before the season, give them a few weeks to settle in then use. But hold 2nd WC as long as possible near end of season & use smartly like before a BB or great fixtures.
7. Look out for out of position players that play further forward than their FPL position. They have often been great for FPL points & I’ve been too slow on bringing them in.
8. Do more research. Check out some stats & listen to experts before transferring in players BUT in the end go with your gut - going with your gut will hurt less when it goes wrong.
9. Keep an eye on price changes carefully from the start. This is something that has actually gone well for me since I started half way through the season. However, don’t just buy a player because their price is about to rise.
10. Have fun with it. That’s important. Keep up with the banter in the FPL community - it’s an amazing place with great people.
