One-third of museums may close forever, according to our National Survey of COVID-19 Impact on US Museums released today. The results document extreme financial distress in the museum field. However, the survey has several other findings.

A few key insights are highlighted:⬇️
Time matters ⏱️

The vast majority (87%) of museums have only 12 months or less of financial operating reserves remaining.

Over half (56%) have less than six months left to cover operations.
Job loss is significant 📉

44% had furloughed or laid off some portion of their staff.

41% anticipated reopening with reduced staff.
Data on how museums continued fulfilling their missions during the pandemic, including:

💡 75% provided educational resources for children, parents, and teachers
💻 43% provided enhanced access to digitized collection resources
🔓 Dozens made their WiFi available for free
Despite continuing this work throughout the pandemic, two-thirds (64%) of directors predicted cuts in education, programming, or other public services due to significant budget cuts.
