24 day #ADA30, important to highlight a difficult & frequently ignored topic, society labeling us a vulnerable pop. that needs to be protected. Society created a system where we become vulnerable targets.
80% of people with disabilities will experience abuse (physical, sexual, verbal, emotional,or financial) and are likely to experience unique types of abuse; such as mobility devices being sabotaged and/or being left out of reach, forced to take meds they don’t want to,
are left in soiled undergarments, experience inappropriate touching, and can be isolated from people in their community. In 90% of abuse cases, the person with the disability knows their abuser. Our system structure makes it so people with disabilities who are abused are trapped.
This only creates and enhances our disability. We have a right to be taught healthy relationships vs. unhealthy and to be given the skills and resources to interrupt these oppressive acts.
Most importantly our society must be committed to making these resources fully accessible and asking us about our lived experiences. Many shelters and programs aren’t disability accessible and our legal system tends to not pursue these cases. The ADA & our society must do better!
