Time of the Doctor needed like 3 parts.

Part one, introduce Trensalore, meet and flesh out the characters there, have the Doctor. Flesh out some of the factions that have arrived at Trenzalore. Have the Doctor face off a couple of the first siege attempts. Show him growing to a point where he decides to stay.

Part one's cliffhanger is the Doctor finally growing to terms with the fact he was going to stay and sends Clara home.

The middle of the episode with old man 11 is the strongest part of the story imo. Very strong characterisation for him here. For Part Two do that but actually show him defeating sieges and connecting with the people of the town.

Also actually SHOW the Daleks attacking the mainframe instead of just telling us about it afterwards. Give us the dramatic tension that would come with that.

For Part Three Clara has been sent home again, like in the original, but we actually spend time with VERY OLD Matt, as he spends time with the people of the town (that we've actually connected with this time) as they prepare to face their doomsday at the hands of the daleks.

This builds up to what we actually got at the end of the episode where Clara returns and we build up to the regeneration. Also please cut the over indulgent bit at the end where he's de-aged, any character moments and final words he has to say can come BEFORE the regeneration.
