People with intellectual disabilities can learn. I remember someone try tell me different with Lewrninf disablity and intellectually is that people with id can’t learn. That is abliest idea the medical people still believe today. I told they wrong we can learn and IQ don’t stop-
That idea supports mental age theory and not allowing us the #righttogrowup we learn differently, not less. We need support way learning don’t involve reading or writing. It is wrong deny us education because of lack of reading and writing.
That happens to many of us. it would happened to me if not been for my mother refusing to believe I could not learn. But many families don’t have resources my mother did. The schools need stop denying student wifh IDD a education in science, history, social studies and the arts.
I had fight my IEP councilor to be allowed in history classes I was denied placement in history classes it was painful for me back then I didn’t understand and internalized abliesm was encouraged in me. I hated my self for discrimination I faced in public school. It still happens
As we speak there students with IDD who segrated only allowed to learn cleaning skills and how use a copier. They call it lifeskilles but they don’t allowed students to get education on acedemics and history and about their own civil rights. Students made do things other dont.
They call it self contained classrooms and why high school students treated it very infantizating. They design the classrooms to look like classes in elementary school. And one room away from other parts of school. The students don’t get to seat with their grade instead they seg
IDEA left Intellectually disabled students behind. Not allowing equal education based on a abliest assumption we can’t learn and shouldnt be allowed acedemic courses. There ways we express knowlege without writing yet acedemia don’t want acknowledge that. That needs to change!
Please help advocated aginest these segrated setting that meant to excluded people with IDD. Support access to acedemics with a standing that writing not only way of learning and expressing knowledge. Thank you reading this thread please share widely. #IDpride #righttogrowup
