#ICYMI Watch the livestream from today's event, "A Post-Galwan Crossroads? Reviewing 70 Years of India-China Relations" hosted by the @StimsonCenter & @SAVoices. I provided my views on the maritime dimension of India-China relationship.
Some of the more important points: 1) Capacity building needs to be supported by the Quad in smaller Indo-Pacific states to distribute security burden. 2) India needs to collaborate w/ other countries in the field of new naval technologies and cyber security.
3) Beijing consolidating its position in all territorial disputes, India is no different. 4) The operational goal of the Indian Navy to maintain sea control from Strait of Hormuz to Strait of Malacca is already too ambitious and stretches available resources.
5) System incompatibility is an existing issue, Indian Navy operating French submarines, Russian aircraft carrier and America ASW aircraft, issue will remain going forward. 6) India cannot engage in kinetic action against Chinese naval assets w/o further Chinese escalation in IOR
7) Quad needs to exercise more frequently in areas such as Sea of Japan, South Eastern Indian Ocean, Philippine Sea. 8) India inviting Australia is great starting move, to call it a Quadrilateral naval alliance is too early, much more needs to happen to reach that status.
9) South East Asia remains the key, the battle for the soul of the Indo-Pacific will be won or lost there. India needs to co-operate more closely with Indonesia, Malaysia, The Philippines, Vietnam.
