It's amusing that the Rockies are taking a shot at the Rangers' ballpark design for a couple reasons (Rockies' tweet since deleted) ...
A portion of seating was so far removed at Coors Field it had to be turned into a party deck to attract people to the RF third level. Many seats are far removed from the sights and sounds of play, which is why it ranked 17th in my stadium ranking based mostly on fan proximity..
The Rangers, as I wrote about last week, will have fans (when they can return) closer to the action in their new stadium design. In most seats, fans will be closer to the field than in any retro park. It will be a better experience than Coors... https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/mlbs-newest-ballpark-is-a-shift-away-from-retro-era-stadiums/
What Coors did well in its design is to blend the structure well into the LoDo area with its brick facade and lower-profile structure (sunken field). They mocked the Rangers for also trying to blend into common open-Texas landscape fixtures, which the planners considered.
Domes never improve the look of a park, imo. And the Globe Life Field roof has been mocked widely on twitter. But it's actually designed to be less "heavy" in appearance in person. It's the only single-panel roof in the majors. Many retro-era roofs simply overwhelm the structure.
Seattle probably has the best retractable roof, imo, because when it is open it reveals what looks like a ballpark. It tracks and supporting structure are well hidden, enabled as it is not totally enclosed or climate-controlled. But the roof looms over RF.
I'm curious if opinion evolves after the initial piling on. MLB stadium design has been very lacking from a game-viewing perspective. Only PNC Park has had a spectator-focused design (only two decks, luxury suites reduced) since Camden opened ... until Globe Life.
The HKS firm wanted Globe Life Field to be inspired by its environment: open-Texas architecture which includes a lot of metal-roofed barns and warehouses, etc. (A brink Globe Life Park was an odd fit). So the Rockies did get the intended motif. Design success!
