A THREAD: what happened at the funeral home in chicago last night is horrific. no one thinks otherwise. ignore the racist trolls who want to talk about violence in chicago's black communities. 1/
but i am seeing black folk here ask/chide/question the role of black lives matter in this and other violent moments. if you spend any time with folks from BLM or MFL, you will know that their work goes beyond state-sanctioned violence. 2/
and there's always the 'what about black-on-black-violence? which of course is a myth. people kill people who live near them...so white folk tend to kill white folk. but the idea that black folk don't speak out against violence wrong. here's one example https://blockclubchicago.org/2020/06/24/chicagoans-do-protest-gun-violence-and-organize-for-safer-neighborhoods-all-the-time-heres-how/ 3/
. @andrewgill (watch his video) and i were one of the first reporters to profile tamar manasseh @MASKchicago_ https://www.wbez.org/stories/one-block-zero-shootings-how-one-mom-is-building-community-in-englewood/ad478912-c74c-439d-a1cf-52f0c58989b6 4/
her work is terrific but it lets systems and structures off the hook when all people do is point to tamar building on corners.

takeaways are: guns a huge problem in america, not just chicago; the fight for black lives is bigger than police violence; black folk can protest more than one thing at once; violence is a symptom of other inequities. 6/6 THE END.
