As someone with a diagnosed Bipolar II disorder (and as someone who takes daily medication to support their own mental health and emotional stability), I've...had a lot of mixed feelings since Kanye's rally. It's clear Kanye is having a very intense, emotional episode.
It's also clear that some of the people close to him enable his mania. I think Kim's statement came from the honest perspective of a concerned wife/mother. I worry about her feeding his "genius," but that's a separate discussion. I think she's honestly doing the best she can do.
That being said - Unfortunately, it's severe, very publicized episodes like this that REALLY work against people (like myself) who have manic-depressive disorders, and I'm seeing a lot of stuff on here that makes me cringe. So, I just want to clarify a few things for y'all:
-Manic-depressive disorders do not make people "crazy"
-Not every manic-depressive disorder is the same
-Not every manic-depressive EPISODE is the same
-Not everyone with a manic-depressive disorder (yes, even the SAME disorder) experiences it the same way
-Manic-depressive disorders are actually quite common
-While there is no cure for a manic-depressive disorder, medication and various forms of treatment can dramatically improve the quality of a person's life and their ability to manage their highs and lows
I've been taking the same medication, every day for the past 5+ years, and I genuinely cannot imagine my life without it. I know myself well enough to know that I cannot afford to miss a refill, skip a few days, etc. I've had nightmares about forgetting or losing my medication.
It's a tough pill to swallow that there's always going to be another pill to swallow. If anyone ever wants to talk about this kind of stuff, I'm very vocal about managing my disorder. It's not something I'm embarrassed by or ashamed of. Slide in the DMs. Anyway...
Seeing people make fun of Kanye in this moment is...actually kind of a bummer. The guy clearly needs treatment. His family seems to be trying to get him the help he needs. If you wouldn't mock someone with a physical disability, don't mock someone with a mental disorder. Thanks!
