I am not a linguist or expert in grammar instruction so I'm not sure I'm qualified to make any judgment here, but there appears to be some distance between your description of the email and the email itself. https://twitter.com/thomaschattwill/status/1285910253788372992
This bulletpoint, as I read it, seems to be saying "Rather than limit emphasis on grammar and sentence construction, we are going to help students understand the ideas/ideologies behind grammatical choices so that they have a clear sense of how and why they are using them."
Perhaps one should not credulously repeat the claims of a right-wing agitprop blog.
I want to return to this for a moment. Rather than read the original source and do cursory research on what the authors are trying to say, Williams amplified a propaganda outlet and used his misreading to spin a narrative of declining standards and “wokeness out of control.”
No one who follows him for his discernment will seek out that original source. They won’t try to figure out what it means. They will take his word for it, further spreading and amplifying the original misreading. It is exactly the kind of thing that degrades the discourse.
easier to make up grist for your grift than to actually try to understand the thing you’re mad at, i guess
