OCIF, @atbfinancial and @SpartanControls and @AltaML are putting in over $3 million to fuel AI Internships in Alberta, particularly in a new Calgary location. Here's why that's a big deal 1/n
Alberta is a world leader in AI/ML research. Did you know Google's @DeepMind has an office here, and that most AI-related gaming achievements (AlphaGo, Deep Blue, etc) have some sort of academic basis at the @UAlberta ?
What's been tough is that, for years, the talent that we'd attract to study under these world-class profs would disappear - attracted to the Valley, Seattle and NYC to work for big tech. There simply weren't the jobs here.
However, that's changing - with nearly 100 AI jobs at @altaml_com already, this amazing talent can call Alberta home. And why wouldn't they want to! It's a great place to raise a family, cost of living is low, you're next to the mountains, and the people are nice.
Which leads me to why this is so exciting.
COVID makes it easier than ever to work in Alberta.
AI/ML is massively more approachable thanks to the plummeting cost of compute and storage.
Everything is looking up!
We have a real opportunity to get AI and ML out of the classroom and into the workplace and worksite, building products that are exported on fiber, not pipelines. This program will accelerate that and build a new future for the province I call home.
Last point: Albertans are notoriously humble (or bad at marketing, depending on how you look at it).
Get excited! Retweet this, write your MLA, message me directly. We need your help to continue making Alberta the best place to work and build in AI.
