Kim K. posted about @kanyewest’s bi-polar disorder and addressed those calling for family members to help. She was SPOT ON. “Those that understand mental illness or even compulsive behavior know that the family is powerless unless the member is a minor...”
Family members can’t do ANYTHING to help an adult loved one living with a mental illness. Trust me, I know. It’s one of the many, MANY problems with the mental health system. No one can help Kanye unless he wants to help himself. 72 hour holds do absolutely nothing.
I feel for the West family. I really do. I know what it’s like to have a loved one living with Bi-polar disorder. You feel helpless. You feel like there’s nothing you can do, and sadly, there isn’t anything anyone can do. The mental health system is so flawed.
Family members can push and push and push, but it’s up to that individual person to want help. It’s legit one of the most difficult things to deal with; to watch your loved one go through episodes and all you can do is sit back, love them, be there for them and pray.
The mental health system shouldn’t give adults the option to get themselves help when they’re diagnosed with a mental illness. There should be MANDATORY monitoring and guidance on how to manage it and live with it.
Oh, and this mandatory guidance/help, for those living with a mental illness, should be free and not cost families thousands of dollars. It’s ridiculous.
Something needs to change. I pray Kanye gets help. Don’t laugh at him or criticize his family. Until you have a loved one living with a mental illness, you’ll never know how difficult it is to manage. Rant over.
