congrats to @em4assembly for knocking off the lentol dynasty in north brooklyn. it’s been around since the first joe lentol succeeded joseph whitehorn, the 3rd socialist ever elected to the state legislature. here’s a thread on the pre-lentol socialist history of the area: (1/11)
whitehorn, a working-class romanian immigrant who joined the socialist party at age 18, won a surprise upset for the assembly seat in 1916—eeking out a 40 vote margin that even he didn’t expect (2/11)
unfortunately he immediately got in trouble bc he didn’t live in the district, but it ended up being ok. next year his district was gerrymandered, but he still won re-election in a socialist wave—becoming one of *TEN* socialists electeds in albany, still the all-time high (3/11)
so what was his record like? he made a name for himself in opposition to the military, most notably voting no on a million dollar defense funding, for which another elected joked that he should be shot (4/11)
his next most popular issue was around municipal control of the purchase and distribution of food and other necessities like fuel and ice. he proposed state-run businesses for those industries, which would sell goods at cost in state-run community stores (5/11)
he was a major advocate of voting rights—fighting for universal suffrage, more elected positions and for no property requirements. he also fought for labor rights and against capital punishment (6/11)
he spoke abt the limitations of the “capitalist institution” of the state leg, and how dems and republicans were united in protecting property and business, even writing about it in the popular journal "the class struggle," which also published trotsky and rosa luxembourg (7/11)
building on their success in albany, socialists ran whitehorn as one of a few congressional candidates, setting up an election for his old seat between socialist harry rogoff and the dem pick/real estate dealer/sorta corrupt conservative barbers union guy, *joseph lentol* (8/11)
democrats and republicans joined forces to stop whitehorn, who lost badly in 3rd place. lentol barely beat rogoff in a split race, and slightly increased his margin in a rematch the next year (9/11)
lentol retired after 2 terms (described as “colorless”) but his son repped the area for 24 years & his grandson joe for 48, at best as a milquetoast backbencher, at worst repping air bnb & lyft. excited for @em4assembly to restore the seat to its former socialist glory! (10/11)
credit for most of this stuff to the amazing @BklynEagle archives. also books like journal of the assembly of the state of NY, the NY red book, the socialists in the NY assembly. and whitehorn's own writing in "the class struggle" can be found here: https://www.marxists.org/history/usa/pubs/class-struggle/index.htm
a bonus good point on that 1918 election—it was part of a dem wave that took a lot of seats back (2 from socialists and 3 from republicans in brooklyn alone)
