I’m back from discovering America through regional fast food drive-thrus. This was my journey. I’ll do a separate thread for roadside attractions - (Mute this thread if you’re not in to garbage food content or hit up my insta for more pics)
I only had one day back in LA and, to me, the fast food chains aren’t proper representation so I hit up Monster Tacos in Eagle Rock & Egg Slut and Donut Man in Grand Central Market.
There’s a million places I’d rather eat in AZ but I’ve always been curious about the freeway gas station chicken place - Chester’s Chicken. Cute box; ok chicken.
New Mexico - I was able to combine my love for ufology (Doctorate in progress), green chiles and old McDonald’s personalities in one location: Roswell. Fun fact - all the McDonald’s in New Mexico have the double green chile burger!
Texas staple while still technically in New Mexico so instead of my usual Whataburger order, I got the double green chile burger. The Dr. Pepper shake is amazing!!!
We lost some time here due to rental van issues so here’s a special throw back to the food that fuels me during The Last Drive-In in Texas. Special thanks to our PA Sam for posing for me. I miss you Schlotzky’s.
Almost forgot the obligatory kolaches stop on the way out of Texas! Kolaches originated with Czech immigrants to Texas and have evolved over time. I prefer the savory sausage ones but they have sweet and fruity varieties too! Thanks @MickiElizabeth for introducing me to them!
Ate these cheese curds while driving through the Oklahoma panhandle. Sorry Oklahoma! Next time!
I realize the next couple maybe aren’t Kansas specific but still qualify as regional. First up - Steak ‘n Shake. I’ll admit I was a little burned out at this point and ordered more conservatively than I normally would have. This was a marathon eating stretch.
Fazolis!!! We had one when I was in college in OC but, like a lot of locations, it closed down. I basically minored in free breadsticks and drive-thru spaghetti
On the Missouri side of Kansas City is a place that was described as “so absolutely disgusting that it is worth your time”. In A Tub did not disappoint; I loved it. I keep thinking about the way the meat paste grease combined with the powdered cheese to form a totally new flavor.
Missouri - I had been looking forward to Maid-Rite mostly because I love saying “loose meat sandwich”. It ended up being one of my favorite stops! Cute drive-in setting, delicious inexpensive food that tasted fresh and they made my iced tea the way I like it!
