PTSD can be developed by perceived danger.

My brain is chemically altered due to evading what I believed to be a kidnapping/trafficking attempt and a sexual harassment the next day. I can’t shop at my local grocery store without multiple escape routes and hyper awareness.
“It could have been worse”

Yes I don’t have the most “severe” form of PTSD. But my brain perceived me to be in danger of being hurt/assaulted. I am always functioning on high alert on the lookout for someone who may do that to me “again” even though it never physically happened.
I am coming public with this because people need to know that even attempts on women can be permanently damaging.

It wasn’t “just” a man trying to coerce me into following him. It wasn’t “just” two guys surrounding me. I wasn’t physically harmed but that doesn’t invalidate it.
There is no “cure” for PTSD.

There are steps to take to reduce your triggers but it can take a long time. Don’t tell someone to “get over it”. Don’t tell them to “just forget about it”. If it was that easy, we would. The nightmares, the constant fear, everything, it’s draining.
You can help people living with PTSD.

(Specifically in my case) Don’t come up behind them. Don’t corner them. Have patience. Do NOT touch them without permission. Don’t get offended, it’s not personal.
If they allow it, try to understand their triggers and help them avoid them.
If you have someone in your life with PTSD, try to independently learn about it.

Every survivor has different symptoms, but we’re all dealing with something. Don’t push to hear the story. Often recounting the incident is a major trigger and worsens daily symptoms.
This book is a GREAT resource. It’s available as paperback, ebook, and audiobook.
