Fascinating. Im guessing this has something to do with ‘locus of control’ i.e if you live in a poorer country & are more exposed to death, in all its forms, in your day-to-day existence then you are more likely to have an external locus of control than ppl in wealthier countries? https://twitter.com/PewReligion/status/1285634408326856706
The richer & the more successful you are, the more likely you are to believe that you have some kind of control over your life and the world around you - an internal locus of control - & subsequently the less pressing your need for a God of some kind, I suspect.
Michael Marmot has written about a ‘status syndrome’ i.e ppl at the top of a hierarchy suffer from less stress bc they feel greater sense of control over their life & subsequently get sick less. Oscar winners live longer than the nominated who didnt win https://twitter.com/robkhenderson/status/1248924576345657347?s=20
Olympic gold medallists live longer than silver & bronze medallists https://twitter.com/robkhenderson/status/1248943656914092037?s=20
But as Louise rightly points out, our sense of control can be somewhat exaggerated & I do sense that this is related to fact that we are not exposed to death as a quotidian part of human existence in the same way that ppl from poorer countries often are https://twitter.com/slp111111/status/1285900462999441408?s=20
C-19 has reminded us all that there are some things in life that are out of our control. I think ppl from poorer countries, in general, probably understand that better than people from richer countries.
