Today we gathered at Stockwell to mark 15 years since Jean Charles de Menezes was killed by the Metropolitan police. No officers were ever charged for his murder. Working with his family has been one of the great honours of my life. Here’s a short thread about #justice4jean (1)
Jean’s death still feels like it was yesterday... especially in a world where police impunity following deaths in custody continues to be the norm in the U.K.
It’s a travesty that not a single police officer was held accountable for the death of an innocent man and that the state even shut down the option of leaving “unlawful killing” at the inquest.
But to this day, what stings the most, was the dirty and ruthless smear campaign orchestrated by the state and the police to spread lies and disinformation about him in order to deflect from the family’s quest for justice.
The strength and bravery of his family never fails to impress me. 15 years on, we still can’t believe we lived through that crazy circus. But they continue, and we continue in the name of justice for Jean and all those who are killed by the police. #BlackLivesMatter
I should also add that the family are still in legal battles with the Metropolitan police for justice and accountability, to find out how and why their campaign was spied on by undercover police #spycops
