Dystopian future idea:

A society farms out the bodies & souls of its bravest & kindest members. Sends them with nothing but sharp sticks to manufactured wars, both military and medical.

They are placated with platitudes of “angels” & “heroes” but left below the breadline.

When the wounded soldiers or fallen nurses or foodmakers or drivers raise their voices to call out “Help us, that we may help you!”, the society marvels at their selflessness.

They are applauded in celebration of their irreplaceable roles (and to drown out their cries).

They are bestowed the title “Key Workers” to recognise society’s complete reliance on them. A Key to the City but with no Key. And also to remind them that they are like Worker Bees. For the good of the Hive they are vital. But each one, alone, is utterly dispensable.

Unfortunately, my idea for a story about a dystopian future was stolen by the government for some of its policy documents.

It’s an absolute travesty that nurses didn’t see a pay rise yesterday or in the last 10 years.
