A few months ago, I joined the unit of lawyers @ICRC who work on « national implementation of #IHL » (aka the @ICRC Advisory Service). People often ask me what we do, so I put together this little thread...
Here a quick brief on our core work. The whole premise of this work is that respect for #IHL starts « at home », ie at the national level: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.icrc.org/en/document/icrc-advisory-services-international-humanitarian-law%3famp
Many of you may be familiar with the thematic Fact Sheets, model laws and ratification kits produced by the Advisory Service to support governments implement their international obligations: https://www.icrc.org/en/war-and-law/ihl-domestic-law/documentation
Some of you may be aware that we maintain a database of State laws & case law that implement #IHL domestically. We categorize them by State & by topic: https://ihl-databases.icrc.org/ihl-nat
We also support the work of national #IHL bodies established to facilitate #IHL implementation domestically: https://www.icrc.org/en/publication/national-committees-and-similar-entities-international-humanitarian-law-guidelines
Some of my brilliant colleagues who do this work around the
include @ihlyai @anquintin @SarahMabeza @sehyr @AhmedAlDawoody @Myriam_RJ @Etienne_Kuster I wish more of them were on Twitter ...

I personally oversee the work we do globaly to train practitioners & policy-makers in the relevance & best use of #IHL to address humanitarian issues. And I support National Red Cross & Red Crescent Societies on #IHL dissemination.
Here is how all we do fits within the broader @ICRC mandate to develop and help implement #IHL: https://www.icrc.org/en/document/ihl-law-in-practice
Fun trivia 1: Our current Director of Law & Policy @HADurhamICRC was a lawyer with the Advisory Service back in the day... Does anyone know where?
Fun trivia 2: Next year, we will celebrate
