Our Housing Delivery Taskforce report is out today.

Research by @Shelter and @Savills has found that 244k jobs could be lost in construction, and 84k fewer homes built in just one year due to #COVID19 without urgent action. Our cross-sector report sets out how to stop this. https://twitter.com/insidehousing/status/1285800878180425729
First, the taskforce has called for an emergency package of funding from Govt to support the sector:

🏡 £1.3bn to convert homes from low-cost ownership to low-cost rent.
🏗️ £3.5bn for a buyer of last resort scheme to buy up unsold homes at cost price to turn into social housing.
Second, we call for recognition of the true cost of building affordable homes in London, and a move away from the "cross subsidy" model where councils and housing associations rely on selling private homes to fund affordable homes. To do this we need ÂŁ4.9bn a year from the Govt.
Third, we call for a skills-led recovery. The Mayor and the Government should work together on a major cross-sector careers campaign to promote the construction sector as a career that can be considered by all.
Finally, we need greater powers to assemble land. The Government should give local authorities and City Hall the ability to compulsory purchase land more cheaply and easily, and a new Compulsory Selling Order power over unused sites in their area.
