Lot of chat about nurses’ pay. Think when we discuss this matter there are a few points that are crucial we remember.
Firstly, nurses have long deserved better pay & conditions. It shouldn’t be painted as a reward in thanks for our hard work during this pandemic. Our efforts responding to COVID-19 simply add to a long list of reasons why nurses & nursing staff deserve better.
Secondly, there’s no need to compare nursing to other professions or demean the work of others who happen to earn more or similar to nursing staff. It doesn’t help our cause in any way, if anything it undermines support from other corners.
Next, the fact that you are able to live off your salary is great, but it isn’t reflective of every nurse and we should be mindful of that. Nurses are highly educated professionals who deserve a pay packet that allows us to live comfortably without fear of making ends meet
Another crucial point is that we are in the middle of a recruitment crisis - one which is likely to be deepened by our departure from the EU. Pay is a clear factor in putting people off joining or staying in the profession. That must change.
One more is that this fight doesn’t stop with government. Private sector nurses - particularly those in care homes - have faced the same pressures we all have and have all played a key role in this recent pandemic, demonstrating their value.
Finally, this is about all who conduct nursing care. Individuals delivering personal care such as carers & HCAs deserve a better pay packet too. They also ought to be registered & regulated in recognition of the challenges faced in their roles & the fact they ARE NOT entry level
