This excellent piece by @McKinleyAn is something that has needed to be told for some time. At its heart is this: you can say that Johnson and the Tories agreed to this, and they did. But they couldn't have done so without it being so vigorously asked for in the first place. https://twitter.com/TheCriticMag/status/1285817602590363648
We see the cries of "own your Brexit", "Sammy should apologise" from politicans who argued for the backstop that we've now got. We see the trade Brexperts and lobbyists smirking and laughing saying that the UK needs a close deal with the EU to minimise Protocol.....
When there was those of us who said the backstop (both forms) was a bad idea, and it would lead to a situation like this, and we were just treated with contempt. The fact is a case was made for NI to remain in EU trading structures, regardless of GB, to try and get GB to as well.
That has failed. So NI pays the price, and the best of both worlds mantra is exposed as the nonsense it always was. The nonsense, remember, that was argued for. And no, but "SM and CU/Remain/Referendum" isn't an answer as this was the means to achieve that. Mess of their making.
