8-minute read
After Hijrah to Medina, the Muhajereen and Ansar seeked to stabilize their lives through marriage. As Fātimah bint Muhammad (ع) grew youth, many prominent figures proposed their interest to Rasool-Allah (ص) such as Abu Bakr, Umar Ibn Al-khattab and also a wealthy sahabi [...]
by the name of Abdul Rahman Bin Awf who offered a dowry of 100 camels and 10000 Dinars. It is notable that even though the Prophet (ص) knew these proposals were unbeneficial to his daughter, he would still ask for her response.
Upon receiving these proposals, the Prophet (ص) would reply with:
THE PROPOSAL:

Sometime later, a group of companions approached Imam Ali (ع) and recommended that he should propose to Fatima (ع) due to he’s close kinship with Rasool-Allah (ص) and he’s Immense jihad for Islam.
With hesitancy and shyness, Imam Ali (ع) approached Rasool-Allah (ص) while lowering he's eyesight towards the ground and the Prophet asked:
The Prophet (ص) then informed he’s daughter Fatimah (ع) the following:
THE DOWRY:
Upon adhering to the Prophet (ص);

Imam Ali (ع) went to the market and sold his armour for 480 dirhams and came back with the amount knotted in the end of his shirt.

[Kanzol Ummal, Vol 7, Pg. 14]
Note: There is a discrepancy between the actual amount the armour was sold for, most ahadith indicate it was between 400-500 dirhams.
Although these ahadith show us Fatima's (ع) dowry, it is also reported in other ahadith that:
The Prophet divided the dowry into three parts. One part he gave to Bilal to buy a nice scented perfume. And the other two parts were put aside for buying clothes and household goods.
THE WEDDING NIGHT:

After some months pass by, Aqeel Ibn Abi Talib (the older brother of tge Imam) confronts the young Imam (ع) and asks him about the marriage. The Imam replies in saying the Prophet (ص) has not yet announced the wedding.
Upon realising his shyness modesty, Aqeel takes Ameer Al-Mu'mineen to outside the Prophet's house and calls Um Salamah and informs her that Ali wants to seek permission to take Fatima (ع) to his home.
Um Salamah then enters the house and says to the Prophet:
THE WEDDING NIGHT (PART 2):

On the night of her wedding, Fatima (ع) took off her wedding dress(bought with the dowry) and gave it to a poor young woman. The following day, the Prophet (ص) visited her and found that she was not wearing her wedding dress.
He asked why and she said, 'O father, a poor young woman knocked the door asking for a dress. I wanted to give her my old dress but then i remembered this saying of Allah:
Consequently, Gabriel descended and said:
THE SERMON OF MARRIAGE:

On concluding agreement of marriage, the Prophet (ص) recited the following verse:
And followed by saying:
The Prophet (ص) then asked the Imam to speak and the Imam (ع) said:
Then Imam Ali (ع) prostrated himself before Allah for this great blessing that Allah had endowed him with. After that, the Prophet (ص) prayed to Allah for Imam Ali and Fatima (ع) saying:
The conclusion of marriage was held in the mosque of the Prophet (ص). The prophet ordered a vessel of dates to be offered to the attendants to eat from it.
THE BANQUET OF MARRIAGE:

On the night of the wedding, the Prophet (ص) said to Imam Ali (ع):

"O Ali, there must be a banquet for the bride."

[Kanzol Ummal, Vol. 7, P.14]
Imam Ali (ع) had nothing in order to prepare the banquet. Sa'd bin Ubadah offered a sheep and some men for the Ansar offered dome corn. Food was prepared and Muslims were invited for dinner.
The Prophet (S) gave some dirhams to Imam Ali (AS) and asked him to buy some oil, dates and cheese. When Imam Ali (AS) bought those things, the Prophet (S) rolled up his sleeves and began splitting the dates and mixing them with the oil and cheese and so he made “heiss”

[...]
And offered it to the invitees. After serving approximately 700 Muslims, the invitees congratulated Imam Ali (AS) and prayed to Allah to bless his marriage.
AFTER THE WEDDING CEREMONY:

At the end of the ceremony, after all the invitees had left. The Prophet placed Fatima on his left side and Ali on his right, and wished them good luck by spraying a bit of sacred saliva from his mouth on both Fatimah and Ali, praying for them saying:
When Fatima was taken to ‘Ali's house on her wedding night, the Prophet proceeded her, Gabriel was on her right, and Michael on her left, and seventy thousand angels followed her. These angels praised and glorified Allah until dawn.
Upon arriving, the Prophet placed Fatima's hand in ‘Ali's hand and said:
ونسألكم الدعاء
