For this week’s #NMSLoves, we’re handing over to Kim Leonard, one of our brilliant volunteers at @lynnmuseum, to tell us about an intriguing archaeological find.
My favourite item is the Iron Age hoard of gold coins, known as ‘staters’, found buried in a cow bone in August 2003.

The coins were made by the Ambiani tribe of Gaul in Northern France who fought against Julius Caesar’s Roman army. It is believed that mercenaries from Britain were involved in the fighting and when they returned to East Anglia, they brought their coins with them. #NMSLoves
You can only admire the creativity and resourcefulness of the person who decided to keep their precious coins in a cow bone. To handle precious objects is one of the benefits of being a volunteer, knowing that one of the last people to touch them was the person who lost them.
I often find myself closing my eyes and transporting myself back over two thousand years, imagining who this person was, what they went through; why they buried their precious possession and why they didn’t have the chance to retrieve it. A tragedy for them, but a gift for us.
