Is anybody measuring the number of unanswered calls by solicitors into custody suites? Why are the police not on KPIs when solicitors have to make contact with detainees within 45 mins? I can't remember the last time I was genuinely able to speak to a detainee in this timeframe
Either custody phone numbers go unanswered or if you do get through, told custody is "too busy" for detainee to be brought to the phone. Is this not a breach of PACE caused by government cuts to police resources? Why is this allowed to happen?
If any Academics out there want to look into this, solicitors keep clear records of the timings between accepting calls from DSCC, attempts to get through to custody, times of when do get through and whether or not was able to speak with detainee within 45 mins rule
Being denied access to timely legal advice because of a conscious government decision to strip resources out of the police should be a national scandal. Time to shine some light on this.
