‘Digital Romance’ / ‘Forbidden Love’ / 'Online Chatting'

A thread on next billion internet users and ‘FRND’-ship

In 2020, offline dating still has a stigma associated with it

Boys and Girls barely get an opportunity to interact with each other before college and marriage. A Boy talking to a Girl may also affect her ‘image’ in the community

(2/n)
Understandably, a steep gradient exists towards 'online chatting' to explore the territory of romance, largely free from offline social cobwebs

Not just in India but also the Middle East, Latin America

(3/n)
The digital world has an inherent acceptance of 'friending strangers'. Probably because it is largely harmless

We saw it in Yahoo, Rediff, Orkut chatrooms in the 2000s. Online dating apps in the 2010s

Now, we witness similar transition for the latest internet adopters

Difference in personality vs. traditional values also pushes the age group of 15-25 to connect with like-minded strangers online for acceptance, avoiding loneliness

FRND enables a matchmaker to break ice between a boy and a girl over audio streaming

If they like each other during the course of conversation, they can continue ‘online chatting’ while the matchmaker moves on to help another pair

(7/n)
Due to obvious challenges in putting pictures online, voice becomes the primary identifier of ‘being real’

Nicknames replace real names, avatars replace real pictures

A layer of pseudo-anonymity is comforting when 'public perception cost' is attached to finding love

Amaira had a bad day. The matchmaker (FRND RJ) Deepali is cheering her up. Sonu, who has a good voice, sings a song to brighten up her mood. Amaira finds it an awesome attempt to impress

Thanks to @3Lmantra. We have found 'The Next Billion Users' highly resonating with our work. I have taken help of the chapter 'Forbidden Love' to craft / channelise some of my thoughts above :)
