im realizing that a lot of newer kinfolk don't understand kin terminology and stuff like that so i decided to create a little thread of resources and advice for someone who has been kin since like, 2013 (for mainly fictionkin, sorry lol)
otherkin is a belief that your soul / your past life is one of that isn't human, which can include but isn't limited to fantasy creatures, real creatures, plants , etc etc! with otherkin, it does not matter as long as you were not a human.
otherkin people DO NOT consider themselves LGBT for being kin, nor do they accept people who do think they are LGBT for being kin. If you find someone who claims to be LGBT for being otherkin, they are a troll.
otherkin is an easy thing to explain, however when it comes to fictionkin (previously known as mediakin or otakin) is a bit of a different boat, however it falls under the otherkin umbrella.
recent defintions of kin have seemed to be characters that you "relate" to instead of having a deeper connection, but that is alright in my opinion! the original fictionkin folk that i knew of were either copingkin or spiritualkin (the term copingkin may be outdated, sorry)
copingkin is exactly what it sounds like, a kintype to help you cope! this includes but isn't limited to taking the identity of a fictional character to build up your own character, delusions (not fun

a lot of people who are in the copingkin area are some of the people who you see saying "me irl no doubles" , so instead of being rude to them, just leave them alone. it's much nicer thing to do.
spiritualkin are fictionkin people who believe that they were a fictional character in their past life! a common belief among people who are spiritualkin is the multiple universe theory, which is a theory that there are billions of different universes, and one of them is of that-
fictional world. another one is that there is a planet, somewhere out there where their kin spent their life. the world is amazing, you can't doubt that there might be a world somewhere where superpowers and other amazing things are real!
with these kinfolk specifically and also otherkin, they may be able to access past life memories! this is done by meditating, listening to music one associates with their past life, speaking to other kinfolk of their source or species, engaging in activites their kin would do etc
some fictionkin specific terms
source: the media your kin came from
canon: your past life world, may differentiate from the source's canon, could be a fem au, different hair colors, etc
canonmate: people who share your canon
id: identity, usually a stronger kintype

Some things to watch out for:
1. people who immediately want to date you because you are their canon mate. you aren't your past life, you are you as you are now. don't date solely because you dated in a past life, but date because you have a true connection.

2. (for otherkin) people who claim that they can P-Shift, aka physical shifting. You *can not* physically shift. You can mentally shift into the mindest of your kin, emotionally shift, but you can not change your body. It is impossible. I don't know if this is still an issue tho.
Welp i guess this is the end of this thread. In the end, don't be afraid to ask questions to people (like me!!), older kinfolk, they will sure be there to accept you and make you feel welcome in the community. I'm liking how normalized being kin is being now, but pls respect
people who still spiritually kin, or who are otherkin, or who copingkin. They are just trying to live normal lives just like the rest of you, may act a bit strange to you, but if they arent harming themselves or others, its not much of an issue. Ty for readingg
