So now that we've discussed #influence & #authority in #leadership, how do we build influence to better execute with authority?

I dislike generic "guru-ish" examples, so here's another reflection from me:

In '13 my father had a massive heart attack (his 3rd or 4th).

Continued:
He lay in an ICU, and we knew he would pass. But as my weekend closed I headed back to work. No telling how long this event would take, and my family doesn't take sick days.

I was called in to the office by my Sgt. & Watch Commander.

Continue:
They were both great supervisors. And that's coming from me who has a disdain for authority.

One of them had recently lost his father, and we talked for a minute.

They gave me a "choice."

Go home and be with family or they were assigning my post as the hospital.

Understanding the order, I turned my keys in and headed home.

I didn't make it out of the parking lot before falling to tears.

I'd been holding in all the emotion for everyone else I hadn't let anything out.

My bosses knew this, and knew me better than I knew myself.

Cont:
This might be the single best act of leadership I ever experienced. It had nothing to do with gunfights or emergency crises.

It was 100% looking out for a teammate.

That generated immense buy in from me.

Continued:
And from then on I knew that whenever they had direction or orders for me, they were in the best interest of a situation.

Not all leaders demonstrate this, and that's why not all leaders get compliance even in a para-military organization.

Continued:
The greatest act of leadership I've experienced has everything to do with #EmotionalIntelligence and taking care of those in your charge.

It had nothing to do with the field of work itself.

Don't pass on #leadership opportunities because they are difficult or emotional.

Cont:
That difficult conversation might just be the most important one you both will ever have.
