I think we need to be clear on this: it’s not only casuals who face pressure to go to work sick. It’s deeply ingrained in our culture of work. Even people with plenty of sick leave stored up feel pressure to be a “good worker” and work when sick
I am aware of someone in Melbourne who had plenty of paid sick leave but still went to work sick for two weeks. turns out she had COVID. she was miserably sick. there’s an ingrained mentality at all levels of work that taking sick leave shows you’re not a hard worker.
if you go to work obviously sick and your boss doesn’t tell you to go home, that’s sending a message just as surely as if they give you a hard time for calling in sick
I have never had a boss ask me to stay home when I was sick. at *most* they’ve said “are you sure? you can take the day off [unpaid] if you like”. we need to make it an enforceable occupational health and safety breach to *let* people work sick even if they “want to”
