Heads up: in the past I used the term “misgender” to describe my experience being called a man due to my stature and skin tone. However because I am cisgender, I cannot be systemically misgendered and therefore, that term is not appropriate.
However, this doesn’t change the harmful reality of Black women of varied gender experiences being masculinized to justify their abuse, mistreatment, erasure and even murder. But this exists on a continuum.
So to put it simply, the best terms for Black cis women in this scenario would be “masculinization”, “defeminization” or “ungendering”. I’ll link to a thread later where I learned about these terms.
And as always, to my Black trans sisters, if I got something inaccurate or incorrect, let me know.
