My evolving thoughts on masks: In the beginning, even in Dec, I was concerned about reports around Covid. I prepped, made masks, bought masks and PPE for my men. Like others, I tried to read as much as I could. In the first few weeks, we wore masks in close quarters in the city.
We implemented safe protocols because we were also deemed essential workers, in construction. We semi-isolated. We prepared for the worst like many. And because I also had to face being immune compromised during this time - we were cautious. Surgery was coming fast.
I listened to the horror stories, flatten the curve etc. I faced a healthcare system that isolated me from my family during this time - in my care. But then, I started watching what was happening around me, and how Covid was being used to strip civil rights. It was unsettling.
During my appointments, the receptionists wore masks, clerks, but not my doctors for the most part. A dozen tines for bloodwork, CT and an MRI. Ultrasounds... after initial screening, most had no masks on. The same for the multiple biopsies. Masks only in the OR.
In recovery, mask use was 50-50. My appointment today, three weeks after major surgery - no masks, just distancing, gloves when examining my incisions and abdomen. My primary Dr focused on building my immune system, not wearing a mask.
I am an at risk individual - and I'm not asking healthy people to wear a mask around me. For my guys, I ask them to stay home if they feel sick. Healing during the summer has been great - it's been a boost, along with the fresh air I have been getting.
The surgery, what I had removed... it taught me that excessive fear is not healthy, or helpful. Each day now is about living, tackling what gets thrown my way, and not taking things for granted. I've talked about this with my older clients - and for them, it's been similar.
One friend, 74, told her family and friends - wear a mask if it makes you feel better, but you don't need to for me. Joan is awesome - and two weeks ago, she did a workshop for a kids day camp. Painting with alcohol inks. That's spunk. Combined, it creates an evolving view.
I'd mask up for TB, dengue fever, Ebola, and a host of other things. I'm not masking up for Covid unless the data changes..
