The mass shooting today on 79th is really disturbing & heartbreaking. This is the result of a cycle of violence that is a consequence of our elected officials investments into root causes of crime. I’m begging you @chicagosmayor invest into communities via social services.
People are not inherently violent. The people who fired on a crowd today did not wake up one morning & decide to shoot. This is a bigger issue that needs to be addressed through community care. The people who survived today will need rapid response support.
The pain people are feeling today can’t be fixed with police. The pain of loss & trauma can’t be addressed with an arrest. Communities may have lost someone they were financially dependent on, families will suffer from PTSD—we need to care for these folks right now.
The CPD budget is bigger than the Department of Family & Support Services, public health, streets & sanitation, clean water, and housing combined.

This city needs to invest into resources at the scale that will significantly reduce crime—housing & public health are just a few.
