1) Today I watched a young woman who was shot, clearly in shock, stare in wonder at her bloody hand as she was loaded in an ambulance.
I also spoke to a 62-year-old woman who was swept from a sailboat on Lake Michigan during a storm at 4 a.m. this weekend
And I watched another 62-year-old woman, struggling with mental illness, at her initial court appearance for trying to burn a building down
I spoke to an elderly man who is terribly worried about his drug addicted son who is in jail on a murder charge
I wrote a story about a record number of new COVID-19 cases posted in Wisconsin, and 2 more deaths in my county
And a lengthy story police demographics and the percentage of local Black and Latino police officers not matching community demographics
I am struck every day, in every interview I do and in writing every story, that my paper and all local papers may disappear any day
If we disappear, I worry the stories of the community, from the tragic to the heroic to the nuts-and-boots of govt, will be disappear too
To be replaced entirely by the rumors, insults and craziness of social media and spin of pr. It is bleak. But tomorrow I’ll try again.
