19 years ago today, my family and I boarded a boat and set sail 90 miles north in an unpredictable and unforgiving ocean fleeing political persecution and pursuing the promise of the American Dream.
In Cuba, my father was constantly jailed by Castro’s thugs… he was even arrested on my 2nd birthday for what the regime calls “diversionismo ideologico”… My uncle was a political prisoner who was physically and psychologically abused in the UMAP concentration camps in Camaguey.
