I've gotten some questions about the difference between working at Microsoft vs AWS. I thought I'd share here. Note this is just my experience, so who knows if it would be yours. Here we go...

Microsoft is a kind, generous, supportive employer. The Giving program, visiting author series, Digital Crimes Unit -- just a few of the awesome programs in place that make working such a great experience. An alumnus once said to me, "Its like being part of a family." Very true.
Microsoft thrives on a "bully" culture. The loudest person in the room usually wins. Microsofties that go on to other companies have the unfortunate reputation of being entitled and demanding. We also ask for resources (staff, budget) bc we're so used to MSFT abundance.
AWS is an austere, principled, intensely intellectual employer. If Amazon were its own country, then the Leadership Principles would be the religion. Docs, our monetary system. Writing, the most valued skill. An introverted culture -- video cameras usually off for calls.
AWS is extremely competitive, focused and highly efficient. If you were a straight-A student in high school, this is where you would go to never feel smart or fast enough. Weekly reviews, tracking, reporting -- you'll be held responsible to real results, so be prepared to work.
Well, that's my analysis. If you have any other questions, just tweet in the thread here and I'd be happy to answer them. Happy Tuesday!
