People: please don’t assign one sign language interpreter an event that goes on for more than 45 minutes and has multiple speakers. It’s not the best practice, and the interpreter will not be able to convey all the information.
They’re more prone to errors and omissions, and will intentionally or unintentionally commit them. And they’ll experience bodily injuries from the repetitive motion of interpreting. So a team of two interpreters is necessary.
Contrary to popular belief, the one who is not actively interpreting is actually working by listening to the speakers and feeding information to the active terp. Sometimes the active terp misses out on certain details or doesn’t understand parts of the message.
Interpreting is a cognitively demanding process. Not all interpreters process the speakers’ accents and speaking styles, and even general audio sounds similarly (this is true for hearing people in general). And then there’s the contents.
